The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a metro-wide LED lighting upgrade, marking a major Dubai Metro update. Nearly 20,000 traditional fixtures have been replaced across stations, concourses, and service areas. The project has already saved 16.7 million kilowatt-hours over two years. It has cut energy bills by about Dh 7.6 million and reducing carbon emissions by 7,283 tonnes. Commuters can feel the difference with brighter yet cooler lighting that makes stations more comfortable, especially during early morning rush hours.
Boosting sustainability while cutting costs
RTA says LEDs convert 95 per cent of electricity into light, losing just 5 per cent as heat. This means better efficiency, lower maintenance, and a smaller environmental footprint. The work supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. Whose aims is to shift the emirate toward clean and renewable energy sources in the coming decades.
Phase three of the project, now underway, is upgrading lighting in parking areas and support facilities. Around 5 per cent of this stage is already complete, with full delivery expected later this year. The initiative is part of other green projects. These include installing solar panels at 22 RTA sites. It also involves using AI-powered robots for track inspections. Together, these efforts link the Dubai Metro update to Dubai’s long-term sustainability goals under the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
