Ashura Procession 2025: Global Solidarity Among Muslims

July 9, 2025 – Millions of Shia and Sunni Muslims across the world participated in Ashura procession on the 10th of Muharram,honoring Imam Hussain , who sacrificed his life at Karbala in 680 AD.

People gathered at the Roza Imam Hussain Karbala to cities across the world. Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, India, the UK, and the United States,the processions marked a signficant moment of global solidarity.Ashura saw increased participation from Sunni communities joining hands with their Shia brethren in mourning.

Authorities in Iraq, Pakistan and other countries increased security measures to ensure the events proceeded safely. They deployed thousands of personnel to ensure safety. In Karbala, over 20 million pilgrims visited Roza Imam Hussain and making it one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Religious leaders and community members talked about how Imam Hussain stood for justice, sacrifice, and standing up to injustice. Ashura, observed annually on the 10th of Muharram in the Islamic calender. Muslims mark it with mourning, sermons, blood donations, and charity to honor Imam Hussain and his companions.

“Imam Hussain’s teachings are about fairness and compassion,” said Sheikh Ali Reza, a religious scholar at the Toronto procession. “The togetherness we’re witnessing this year shows how his message continues to inspire people.”

Ashura, which falls on the 10th of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, is one of the most sacred and reflective days in Islam.Every year, Muslims honor the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, along with his family and followers, through mourning ceremonies, religious speeches, blood donations, and charitable activities.The day of Ashura brings together millions from diverse backgrounds to honor Imam Hussein’s movement and aspire to uphold his legacy.
