Kut, Iraq — On Thursday, officials reported a fatal fire at retail mall which is newly opened in the eastern Iraqi city of Kut. The blaze claimed the lives of at least 60 people, including many women and children.
According to Mohammed al-Mayyeh, the governor of Wasit province, the fire at retail mall started on the fifth floor of the five-story building. It quickly spread, trapping and smothering several people inside. Emergency responders rescued over forty-five individuals. However, at least eleven people are still missing as search operations continue.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Authorities have charged the mall owner and the building owner with criminal offenses. Investigations are underway. Governor al-Mayyeh declared a three-day mourning period after the disaster. He also pledged to release preliminary findings within forty-eight hours.
This is one of the deadliest fire at retail mall in recent Iraqi history. It has renewed concerns about poor building safety regulations in the country.
Officials are still searching through the burned remains of the shopping center. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing. Authorities urge the public to remain cautious and alert.
