Thailand and Cambodia conflict escalated on June 24. A minimum of eleven civilians were killed as a result of the violence. Close to the border with Cambodia, the Thailand and Cambodia conflict broke out in the vicinity of the Ta Moan Thom temple. The temple is located in eastern Thailand. Rockets, artillery, and heavy weaponry were fired by both sides of the conflict. Cambodian military sites were the targets of airstrikes carried out by Thailand using F-16 jets. Thailand’s border regions became the target of artillery and rocket fire from Cambodia.
At least six border regions were affected by the fighting. Conflict resulted in casualties and damage to civilian facilities, one of which being a hospital in Thailand. Cambodia has been accused of assaulting both civilian and military targets, according to the Thai authorities. Cambodia made the statement that it retaliated against Thailand’s armed aggression. The diplomatic connections between the two countries were placed on a lower level, and due to the Thailand and Cambodia conflict border crossings between them were shut down.

An ongoing territorial dispute over the Emerald Triangle region, which has been contested for decades, is the source of tensions in the region. In May, a Cambodian soldier was slain, which sparked a recent outbreak of unrest that has increased this week with rocket assaults and airstrikes. In the midst of the intensifying battle, hundreds of residents sought refuge. Each of the two governments holds the other responsible for initiating the conflicts. Due to the ongoing military exchanges near the border, the situation continues to be one of heightened tension.
