President Donald Trump gave Russia a 50-day deadline to negotiate peace with Ukraine. He warned that the U.S. would impose tough sanctions if Russia failed to comply. This includes a 100% tariff on Russian goods. He also said countries doing business with Russia would face tariffs.
At a White House event with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump announced a new arms deal. Ukraine will get Patriot missiles and other weapons from the U.S., funded and delivered by NATO allies. Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for continued attacks on Ukrainian cities. He said talks had failed and urged action.
Trump called Putin a “tough guy” who has “deceived” many leaders. He mentioned private talks with Putin but said they didn’t change Russia’s actions. His tougher stance was partly influenced by his wife, Melania. Trump’s new strategy also targets Russia’s trade partners like China and India.

Russia’s Response
The Kremlin dismissed Trump’s threats as theater. Former President Dmitry Medvedev called the ultimatum “theatrical.” Russian official Konstantin Kosachev called it “nonsensical” and doubted changes would happen in 50 days. Moscow remains confident in its military and economy. Officials say Russia can endure Western sanctions. The Kremlin is not considering an unconditional ceasefire.
Russian stocks rose 2.7% after the announcement, showing investor confidence that harsh sanctions may not come soon. Russia plans to continue military operations in Ukraine despite international pressure.
Experts debate the effectiveness of tariff threats. Global trade ties and alternate markets complicate enforcement. For now, the U.S. is focused on backing Ukraine and ramping up pressure on Moscow. Russia’s reaction to the ultimatum will unfold in the coming weeks.
