Electric Tram Launched in Pakistan for the First Time

Electric tram technology has officially made its way to Pakistan, and it’s already turning heads. Launched in Lahore, the country’s first-ever electric tram is not only trackless and eco-friendly, but also equipped with modern comforts commuters can appreciate. The pilot ride took place along Raiwind Road, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Transport Minister Bilal Akbar on board to experience the milestone firsthand.

This launch signals the start of a new chapter in Pakistan’s public transport. Designed to ease traffic, reduce pollution, and make daily travel more comfortable, the electric tram brings smart mobility to city roads. Instead of running on old-school rail tracks, it uses GPS and sensors to glide along existing routes with ease.

Electric Tram Brings Smart, Clean Mobility to Lahore

Built to carry up to 320 passengers in its three connected coaches, the electric tram combines space, safety, and smart features like air conditioning, CCTV, Wi-Fi, and a digital driver assist system. With a fourth coach, it can carry more than 400 people.

The tram runs up to 40 kilometers on a full charge. A 10-minute fast charge gives it a 27 km boost, making it efficient for city routes. Since it doesn’t need tracks, it uses existing roads and saves massive infrastructure costs.

The trial route runs from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura along Canal Road. For now, it’s free to ride. If the test phase goes well, the service will expand to cities like Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and eventually 30 cities over the next four years.

The electric tram represents more than just modern transport; it shows Pakistan’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in urban mobility.
